A new type of treatment that is used to help people who suffer from major depressive disorder, is now available at The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of major depression. It’s called a “noninvasive” procedure because it’s done without using surgery or cutting the skin. It works to activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity during depression. TMS is typically recommended for people who have not found effective solutions through standard treatments such as medicines, and psychotherapy.
