Explore Different Areas of Mental Illness
The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester collaborates with many other organizations to conduct research studies exploring many different areas of mental illness. Some of our research partners include:
- Dartmouth Medical School
- The Social Security Administration
- Massachusetts General Hospital
- UT Health San Antonio, Texas
- Vanguard Research Group
- Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University
Expanding Knowledge Through Collaboration
Our research department is professionally-staffed with a team seeks to build successful collaborations with other research communities. We have performed leading-edge mental health research on evidence-based practices for people with serious mental illness for more than 20 years, and we were the primary site for the early ground-breaking studies with Dartmouth Medical School on Supported Employment (SE) practice, Co-Occurring Disorders (IDDT), and Intensive Case Management. We maintain a close relationship with Dartmouth College and the Geisel School of Medicine.
We have participated in numerous national studies, which include:
- The Mental Health Treatment Study through the U.S. Social Security Administration
- The RAISE Study funded by NIMH for first episode psychosis
- Medication trials, including Massachusetts General Hospital’s study of the use of smoking cessation medication for people diagnosed with Schizophrenia.
- Trials examining the effectiveness of technology interventions such as smart phone use (for symptom management applications and fitness texting delivered via a fitness coach) as well as web based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Our research department has been engaged in all stages of research design, recruitment, implementation, interpretation, and dissemination. Protocols range from clinical medication trials to psychosocial interventions, and from neuropsychological testing to substance use screening.
We are proud of our record of reliably recruiting large numbers of subjects for the many different studies for which we have been a partner. The research department also helps with collecting and analyzing data to determine treatment outcomes.
Our Data Tells A Story
Our continuous involvement in research studies and intensive evaluation of program outcomes has allowed The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester to implement new evidence-based programs and services, which improve the well-being and mental health outcomes for some of our most vulnerable patients. These programs are geared toward those who are released from hospital emergency rooms, correctional facilities, or other specific settings. Newly added programs include:
Care Transitions Team (CATT), is a longer-term program that was designed to support individuals with a mental illness who are released from correctional or inpatient hospital settings, to improve patient outcomes and reduce recidivism.
The Intensive Transitions Team (ITT) program serves a population with significant mental health needs and complex medical requirements, intending to rapidly connect patients to needed services, benefiting both the community and the patients themselves through improved mental health and reductions in emergency medical costs.
